New Years Resolutions: how to stay grounded in a busy world and not lose yourself
Share
If you’ve reached this blog, it’s probably because you’re trying to keep a balanced life - maybe this is one of your New Years Resolutions! Is it?
Let me tell you something before we dive in…
You’re doing well. Even just arriving on this page shows your commitment to the most important person in your world: YOU.
Now, let’s talk about something that’s easier said than done—staying grounded. Life gets busy, chaotic even, and honestly, sometimes it feels like you’re a balloon being pulled in every direction.
We’ve experienced days where our mind spins with to-do lists, our phone’s pinging every two minutes, and somehow, you’re still trying to make sure everyone else is okay.
But here’s the thing: staying grounded isn’t about adding more to your plate; it’s about clearing some space, coming back to yourself, and finding a steady place to stand in the middle of the whirlwind.
What Does It Mean to Stay Grounded?
First, let’s have a clear understanding of the word "grounded"? And no, it's not just a yoga buzzword. Being grounded is about feeling present, calm, and connected. It’s knowing where you are, both physically and emotionally.
It's a beautiful way to start the New Year, as well.
When you're grounded, you're less likely to react impulsively or let stress knock you over like a gust of wind. Instead, you respond from a place of balance. And, no, this doesn’t mean being zen 24/7, heck that’s not realistic.
We have to acknowledge that life throws curveballs, and staying grounded just makes it easier to handle them.
What Happens When We’re Ungrounded?
When you’re ungrounded, life feels harder. You’re forgetful, easily distracted, and more reactive. I once showed up to a meeting and they noticed that I kept on spacing out, I was so out of it. It’s frustrating, but it’s also a signal—your body and mind are asking you to slow down and reconnect.
Another time when I was travelling, I felt so ungrounded that I completely missed my train and ended up stuck in a city I didn't want to be in for another night and missed out on catching up with old friends in a new city because of this!
Dropping into the body is so important, as I think many of us know.
Why Do We Struggle With It?
Let’s face it: our world is designed to unground us. Phones, deadlines, noise, drama… it’s all pulling us out of our center.
I know I’m not the only one who experienced walking into a room and instantly felt drained. Or spent hours scrolling through social media and felt disconnected afterwards? (the words ‘disconnect to connect’ have never been more true) That’s ungrounded energy.
For me, I noticed this most during the holiday season. You can easily get lost with all the running around trying to make everything perfect—perfect gifts, perfect meals, perfect everything. Spoiler alert: none of it was perfect, and I only ended up exhausted while beating myself for not making everything as perfect as I planned it to be. (see? can’t even give myself a break)
But even outside of the holidays, it’s the same story. Life gets loud, and we lose touch with the quiet parts of ourselves.
How Can We Stay Grounded?
1. Reconnect With Nature
There’s something magical about walking barefoot on the grass or sand, feeling the earth under your feet. It’s not just a hippie thing—it’s science. When your body connects to the earth, it literally balances your energy.
I remember having a friend who often goes to the beach and just soaks their feet in the water. They say it’s like the sea washes all the negative energy away. So, if you’re feeling scattered, step outside. Find a park, a beach, or even a patch of dirt. Let Mama Gaia do her thing.
2. Slow Down
Pfft. Yeah, easier said than done, right? But you should try to apply it in your routines.
Slowing down doesn’t mean stopping everything. It means creating little moments of pause—like taking three deep breaths before you answer an email or sipping your tea instead of gulping it down. It’s in those small pauses where you find your balance.
3. Move Your Body
Yoga, stretching, walking—whatever feels good, go and do it. Movement helps you reconnect with your physical self, which is crucial for grounding.
During a particularly chaotic week, I went out for a color walk. Not my usual thing, I just saw it while scrolling through Instagram and it seemed like a fun activity. It’s when you designate a color for your walk. So if you’re going for red, take a picture of all the things red during your walk. It’s fun to look back and appreciate how beautiful the little things are (that we often overlook on a daily basis). So go and find what works for you.
4. Use Grounding Tools
Crystals like black tourmaline or smoky quartz can be helpful grounding companions. Carry one in your pocket or place it near your workspace. And no, you don’t have to be a crystal expert—just pick one that feels good to you.
I have a labradorite necklace that I often hold or touch (it became a habit) and doing that helps me ground myself. Labradorite is known for promoting emotional healing and helping you with self-reflection, enhance creativity, and promote inspiration.
5. Meditation and Breathwork
Meditation doesn’t have to be fancy. Just sit, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. When my mind races, I imagine roots growing from my feet, anchoring me deep into the earth. It’s simple, but it works.
6. Set Boundaries
Here’s a hard truth: you can’t do it all, and you shouldn’t have to. Saying "no" to that extra commitment or stepping away from toxic situations isn’t selfish—it’s self-care. Protecting your energy is one of the most grounding things you can do.
7. Explore Tarot for Grounding
The Mystic Muse Journal and The Elemental Empath Oracle
Tarot might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about grounding, but it can be a surprisingly powerful tool. Pulling a card or two in the morning can help you center your energy and set an intention for the day. Cards like The Empress or The Hermit can remind you to reconnect with nature and your inner wisdom.
Personally, when I feel off-balance, I shuffle my deck, take a deep breath, and ask, "What do I need to focus on to feel more grounded?" The insights are often just what I need, and write it in my journal to ponder on.
So grounding ourselves may come off different for everyone, and it isn’t a one-time thing. It’s a daily practice, like brushing your teeth or making your bed. Some days you’ll nail it, and other days you’ll feel like a scattered mess…and that’s okay. What matters is that you keep coming back to yourself, again and again.
So, next time life feels like it’s spinning out of control, remember: you’re not alone, and you’ve got tools and ways to find your footing. Take a breath. Step outside. Focus on what’s real and right in front of you.
