New Years Resolutions: how to stay grounded in a busy world and not lose yourself
Share
If youâve reached this blog, itâs probably because youâre trying to keep a balanced life - maybe this is one of your New Years Resolutions! Is it?
Let me tell you something before we dive inâŚ
Youâre doing well. Even just arriving on this page shows your commitment to the most important person in your world: YOU.
Now, letâs talk about something thatâs easier said than doneâstaying grounded. Life gets busy, chaotic even, and honestly, sometimes it feels like youâre a balloon being pulled in every direction.
Weâve experienced days where our mind spins with to-do lists, our phoneâs pinging every two minutes, and somehow, youâre still trying to make sure everyone else is okay.
But hereâs the thing: staying grounded isnât about adding more to your plate; itâs about clearing some space, coming back to yourself, and finding a steady place to stand in the middle of the whirlwind.
What Does It Mean to Stay Grounded?

Â
First, letâs have a clear understanding of the word "grounded"? And no, it's not just a yoga buzzword. Being grounded is about feeling present, calm, and connected. Itâs knowing where you are, both physically and emotionally.
It's a beautiful way to start the New Year, as well.
When you're grounded, you're less likely to react impulsively or let stress knock you over like a gust of wind. Instead, you respond from a place of balance. And, no, this doesnât mean being zen 24/7, heck thatâs not realistic.
We have to acknowledge that life throws curveballs, and staying grounded just makes it easier to handle them.
What Happens When Weâre Ungrounded?
When youâre ungrounded, life feels harder. Youâre forgetful, easily distracted, and more reactive. I once showed up to a meeting and they noticed that I kept on spacing out, I was so out of it. Itâs frustrating, but itâs also a signalâyour body and mind are asking you to slow down and reconnect.
Another time when I was travelling, I felt so ungrounded that I completely missed my train and ended up stuck in a city I didn't want to be in for another night and missed out on catching up with old friends in a new city because of this!
Dropping into the body is so important, as I think many of us know.
Why Do We Struggle With It?
Letâs face it: our world is designed to unground us. Phones, deadlines, noise, drama⌠itâs all pulling us out of our center.
I know Iâm not the only one who experienced walking into a room and instantly felt drained. Or spent hours scrolling through social media and felt disconnected afterwards? (the words âdisconnect to connectâ have never been more true) Thatâs ungrounded energy.
For me, I noticed this most during the holiday season. You can easily get lost with all the running around trying to make everything perfectâperfect gifts, perfect meals, perfect everything. Spoiler alert: none of it was perfect, and I only ended up exhausted while beating myself for not making everything as perfect as I planned it to be. (see? canât even give myself a break)
But even outside of the holidays, itâs the same story. Life gets loud, and we lose touch with the quiet parts of ourselves.
How Can We Stay Grounded?

1. Reconnect With Nature
Thereâs something magical about walking barefoot on the grass or sand, feeling the earth under your feet. Itâs not just a hippie thingâitâs science. When your body connects to the earth, it literally balances your energy.
I remember having a friend who often goes to the beach and just soaks their feet in the water. They say itâs like the sea washes all the negative energy away. So, if youâre feeling scattered, step outside. Find a park, a beach, or even a patch of dirt. Let Mama Gaia do her thing.
2. Slow Down
Pfft. Yeah, easier said than done, right? But you should try to apply it in your routines.
Slowing down doesnât mean stopping everything. It means creating little moments of pauseâlike taking three deep breaths before you answer an email or sipping your tea instead of gulping it down. Itâs in those small pauses where you find your balance.
3. Move Your Body
Yoga, stretching, walkingâwhatever feels good, go and do it. Movement helps you reconnect with your physical self, which is crucial for grounding.Â
During a particularly chaotic week, I went out for a color walk. Not my usual thing, I just saw it while scrolling through Instagram and it seemed like a fun activity. Itâs when you designate a color for your walk. So if youâre going for red, take a picture of all the things red during your walk. Itâs fun to look back and appreciate how beautiful the little things are (that we often overlook on a daily basis). So go and find what works for you.
4. Use Grounding Tools
Crystals like black tourmaline or smoky quartz can be helpful grounding companions. Carry one in your pocket or place it near your workspace. And no, you donât have to be a crystal expertâjust pick one that feels good to you.
I have a labradorite necklace that I often hold or touch (it became a habit) and doing that helps me ground myself. Labradorite is known for promoting emotional healing and helping you with self-reflection, enhance creativity, and promote inspiration.
5. Meditation and Breathwork
Meditation doesnât have to be fancy. Just sit, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. When my mind races, I imagine roots growing from my feet, anchoring me deep into the earth. Itâs simple, but it works.
6. Set Boundaries
Hereâs a hard truth: you canât do it all, and you shouldnât have to. Saying "no" to that extra commitment or stepping away from toxic situations isnât selfishâitâs self-care. Protecting your energy is one of the most grounding things you can do.
7. Explore Tarot for Grounding

The Mystic Muse Journal and The Elemental Empath OracleÂ
Tarot might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about grounding, but it can be a surprisingly powerful tool. Pulling a card or two in the morning can help you center your energy and set an intention for the day. Cards like The Empress or The Hermit can remind you to reconnect with nature and your inner wisdom.
Personally, when I feel off-balance, I shuffle my deck, take a deep breath, and ask, "What do I need to focus on to feel more grounded?" The insights are often just what I need, and write it in my journal to ponder on.
So grounding ourselves may come off different for everyone, and it isnât a one-time thing. Itâs a daily practice, like brushing your teeth or making your bed. Some days youâll nail it, and other days youâll feel like a scattered messâŚand thatâs okay. What matters is that you keep coming back to yourself, again and again.
So, next time life feels like itâs spinning out of control, remember: youâre not alone, and youâve got tools and ways to find your footing. Take a breath. Step outside. Focus on whatâs real and right in front of you.Â
